Your Power Bill Went Up, But It Would Be Worse Under Edison, Statistics Show

Many Malibu people are upset that their power bills have gone up … since their electric generation source was switched by the City of Malibu away from Southern California Edison.
A new provider … called the Clean Power Alliance … is now supplying the electricity that is delivered by Southern California Edison to your house or business.
New data published by the two companies show that Edison and Clean Power Alliance rates have both gone up.
In fact … Edison rates have increased four times in the last 2 years.
The Edison base rate is for electricity that does not come from as many green sources as the Clean power Alliance … although Edison does offer 50 percent green or 100 percent green options.
Both of those are about 10 percent more expensive that the Clean Power Alliance rate.
But the new power company’s rates are about 10 percent less than Edison’s.
In fact … the very cheapest power is the 36 percent green rate offered by the Clean power Alliance … it beats Edison by one dollar.
The state side by side comparison has been mailed to every Malibu power customer .. a transparency effort required by state law.
The bottom line is that the new power cooperative is charging almost exactly the same rates as Malibu.
And there was some controversy here … when the city council voted to place everyone by default on the Clean Energy Alliance’s 50 percent green rate … instead of the 100 percent green rate.
The difference between the two rates … 9 percent.
And the alliance’s all-green power rate is 13 dollars cheaper than the 100 percent green rate offered by Edison.
