Malibu voters favor modest tax hike – but 49% rate SMMUSD poorly –
Malibu residents overwhelmingly say the local school district is doing a poor or only fair job at its schools… according to results of a survey conducted by the district and just released.
But 62 percent of Malibu voters would support a one hundred and fifty million Dollar School bond election … if the money would all stay in Malibu.
Increase the bond issue to $250 million … and the level of support would dropped to 52% … which is just short of the 55% needed to pass a the bigger bond issue.
Santa Monica school board members are looking at splitting Malibu and Santa Monica into different sub-districts … for the purpose of bond elections.
Portions of Malibu High School are 70 years old … contaminated with P C B … and in terrible shape.
Earlier bond issues passed by voters in the two-city school district siphoned tens of millions of dollars out of Malibu and into Santa Monica … leaving Malibu High in literal shambles … one of the reasons for the furor to split the school district.
