Ventura County Struggles To Clean Upper Malibu Creek
Written by 991KBU on May 4, 2018
There’s controversy in the upper Malibu Creek watershed …. way up north in Oak Park … north of the 101 freeway along Kanan Road.
The Ventura County flood control agency is under legal obligation to reduce urban runoff … things like dog poop … fertilizer and trash … into Malibu Creek.
The Acorn newspaper reports that thnis was supposed to be done to meet a federal cl;ena water deadline six years ago.
The plan was to remove more than two dozen trees in the creekbed … to install biolfilters that would let polluted water spread out and then percolate into the ground water.
People objected to the tree removal.
The engineers relented … and have come up with a concept called modular wetlands.
This will clean the water heading into Malibu Canyon … and allow the trees to remain.
Water quality standards for the Malibu Creek Watershed were determined by Los Angeles County, which imposed a 2012 deadline for meeting dry weather standards.
Ventura County will come in seven years late … when the project is completed next year.
