Underwater Big Concrete Power Structure
Written by 991KBU on October 1, 2019
A gigantic underwater concrete structure that once transported electricity between three western states has to be removed from the ocean bed just off PCH next to Gladstone’s restaurant.
The L A Department of Water and Power has unveiled plans for tearing out the underwater concrete structures … called cathodes … and to rip out undersea cables that connect it to the western power grid.
New cathodes have been installed.
The provide a massive electrical connection into the ocean … a ground … for a power line that stretches from L A to Grand Coulee Dam in Washington State.
Believe it or not … the D W P uses the ocean near Malibu as a ground for millions of watts of electric current.
The power is shipped back and forth to Washington state to balance power loads in the western U-S … Canada and Baja.
It’s a D-C circuit … engineers for decades have used the earth itself as one half of the power line.
A new cathode was installed last year.
The old one has to come out.
It will be a big industrial project … just off P C H at Sunset Boulevard … next year.
The D W P plans go before the Coastal Commission in 2 two weeks.
