Topanga Fire Out Overnight, Santa Anas Blow Right Past Malibu, But Why Would LAPD Chase a Burning Trailer Into a Canyon?

Written by on September 9, 2020

A fire caused by a police pursuit thru Topanga Canyon is out.

But Topanga Canyon Boulevard is still closed … we’ll have that story in a minute.

But first …

There were no winds in Malibu last night.

Hit and miss Santa Anas missed us.

Up north … near Acton .. it got windy overnight.

Winds hit 34 miels an hour up north of Agoura Hills.

Near us … however .. no Santa Anas this morning.

No winds at all … even though red flags are up thru 8 tonight.

A wildfire burning near Big Sur overtook firefighters on Tuesday morning, hospitalizing three of them as they tried to defend a ranger station in the Los Padres National Forest.

14 firefighters were forced to deploy their shelters near Nacimiento Ranger Station, which was destroyed.

Three firefighters were flown to a hospital in Fresno … one is in critical condition

Closer to Malibu …the Bobcat Fire east of Pasadena has  grown to 10,344 acres with no containment.

Fire officials issued evacuation WARNINGS for residents in Duarte, Bradbury, Monrovia, Acadia, Sierra Madre.

And now … upper parts of Pasadena and Altadena.

Back to Topanga Canyon.

Yesterday’s brush fire is out … but it may have triggered a road closure for as long as several days.

Caltrans engineers are contending with a fire that burned into the rock fall area … where landslides started during the big rains of December 2018.

There Caltrans …. crews repeatedly have to deal with huge rocks falling down canton walls.

Rocks the size of garbage cans were falling on the Topanga Canyon road last night.

The fire was caused by a man driving a pickup truck … chased by police … with a trailer with a broken axle.

Several spot fires were lit in Topanga Canyon … as this guy sped thru with LAPD in fiery hot pursuit.

The driver had caused several traffic crashes in the Woodland Hills area.

The chase began at Victory Boulevard and De Soto Avenue.

Police chased him through Topanga Canyon down to the beach … he turned west into Malibu.

The truck and busted trailer finely ground to a halt just west of carbon Canyon … there was a one hour standoff with the the LAPD before the guy gave up.

It took a Los Angeles police more than an hour and a half to reopen Pacific Coast Highway during the evening rush-hour.

In the marooned truck and trailer we’re still stuck in the middle of the road for hours … crippling traffic in Malibu.

We have questions in to LAPD headquarters … about the decisions to chase a burning trailer into a tindfer dry Topanga Canyon.

And why did it take 90 minutes for LAPD to relinquish PCH to traffic???

Stay tuned.
