Today Is The Day For 80 Malibu Homeowners To Decide On Debris Removal
Written by 991KBU on February 15, 2019
Today is the deadline … three deadlines actually.
This is the last day to register for FEMA or S B A disaster loans or grants.
But perhaps more importantly for Malibu … today is the last day to sign up for the state’s debris removal program … for destroyed houses.
As of early this week … 80 Malibu homeowners had yet to indicate which way they will go with their fire wreckage.
The state program???
Hire a contractor???
Do it yourself???
Those all require permits … and those all must have all the debris removed by one month from today … March 15th.
The fourth option … just walk away.
The county is threatening to declare properties that are not cleared in one month … to be public nuisances.
And the county says it will send its own crews to clear fire destroyed houses … with the bill sent to the landowner.
Anyone who still needs to talk to county officials about the debris program can to that at the Debris Removal Operations Center … at 26610 Agoura Road in Calabasas.
It’s open until 5 today.
——
Steady rains yesterday prevented the state task forces from removing yesterday.
But the Debris Removal Operations Center in Calabasas reports that fire debris has been cleared from 22 properties in Los Angeles County … and another 10 in Ventura County.
Assessment and monitoring teams will now collect soil samples from each cleared property for independent testing and analysis by certified laboratories to ensure that the soil meets state cleanup goals.
Once approved soil samples are verified by the state, debris removal officials will schedule properties for erosion control … to prevent mud from sloughing off the land.
State contractors have completed 482 site assessments and 385 asbestos surveys related to private properties affected by the fires in the two fire areas.
Debris officials will notify property owners who have opted in to the state program 24-48 hours prior to the start of debris removal operations on their property, Property owners may walk the property with crews before work begins.
