State May Build $69 Million Overpass On Way To Costco

Yesterday in San Diego … Republican party activists submitted petitions for a statewide election question … on repealing the 12 cent gas tax increase.
The tax is aimed at doubling the amount of money available for local transportation spending.
If the repeal initiative qualifies for the November ballot … voters can expect a costly and highly visible showdown.
Repeal supporters are hoping the ballot measure will reinvigorate the California anti tax movement and the Republican party … whoch does not hold any startewide office.
But California businesses largely support the tex measure … and have joined a powerful coalition of labor and transportation groups that pushed for the new taxes and fees last year.
A recent poll suggests the race could be close.
A statewide Public Policy Institute of California survey taken in January found that likely voters were split … with 47 percent favoring a repeal of the tax and 48 percent opposed.
Caltrans … meanwhile … is rushing out construction projects to show voters that the gas tax money will be spent on needed projects,
The 2 point 1 million dollar esurfacing of P C H in western Malibu … now underway at night … is one of those projects.
Meanwhile … the California State Transportation Board is going to vote this month on a 69 million dollar bridge over the nearest railroad grade crossing to Malibu.
The Rice Avenue railroad crossing … in Oxnard … is a scene of frequent train versus vehicle crashes.
Rice Avenue connects Pacific Coast Highway to the 101 Freeway near the Oxnard Costco.
If the 69 million dollars in gas tax appropriations is approved by the transportation board … Oxnard will start building the bridge next year.
The state …. Oxnard and the federal government are still negotiation over repaving Rice Avenue … which hasn’t been done in 25 years.
Heavy truck traffic between the freeway and Port Hueneme have taken its toll on the road … which is the back entrance to Malibu.
