Sheriff Has On-Duty Deputies Urging Voters To Testify Against Supervisors Budget Plan

Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva is fighting with all he’s got to oppose a proposal to allow voters to decide on a measure to shift money for social services away from the sheriff.
The Board of Supervisors today will vote on placing a county charter amendment before voters this fall.
If approved … 10 percent of the county budget would be reserved for such programs as rent assistance … community-based youth programs … job training for low income residents … loans for small businesses with a focus on minority owned businesses … and other social programs.
The sheriff has some of his deputies working the social media to drum up opposition to the plan.
Speaking on an official sheriff’s department channel … deputies say the measure would devastate public safety and continue to not only to defund the sheriff’s office … but also prosecutors, probation officers and the courts.
The sheriff and his deputies are urging voters to flood the supervisors’ phone lines today to oppose the proposal to put the matter before voters.
Malibu-area supervisor Sheila Kuehl is one of two authors of the proposal.
But it doesn’t appear to have more than two votes on the five member Board fo Supervisors.
Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Janice Hahn are calling for a review and analysis of the Kuehl-Solis charter amendment.
The L A Times editorial board says it is shocking to realize that such an analysis was not done before putting the charter measure on the agenda.
With Republican Kathryn Barger holding the swing vote … it doesn’t appear that Kuehl’s defund the police referendum will be placed on the ballot.
Yet.
