Second Set Of Three Story Buildings Unveiled For Kanan Road Near Malibu Gateway

Written by on August 7, 2020

Plans are being unveiled for yet another set of three story high buildings…. stores with apartment buildings on top of them … on Kanan Road.

Agoura Hills has plans to create a downtown urban village … right at the gateway to Malibu on Kanan … one block south of the 101 Freeway.

This one is calle the West Village …

Critics say it would be a wall of three story high buildings … blocking views of Ladyface Mountain from Kanan Road at Agoura Road.

Agoura Kanan Village LLC has hosted a digital community forum for Agoura Hills residents.

The West Village development would feature 39,000 square feet of commercial space … five buildings with 78 residential units on top of them.

It’s a small site … seven acres.

But it is at the base of Ladyface Mountain … the entrance to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and gateway to Malibu.

The developer says his recent electronic community forum pleases him.

Some of the community members were pleased with the design and achieving the ‘village’ aspects laid out in the specific plan. That was good news.

But he says he is aware that the intersection of Kanan Road at Agoura Road is already jammed much of the time …. sometimes backed up 10 miles or more.

He tells the Acorn newspaper that his project has the design and appropriate size and exits to not impact traffic.

But there’s another three story project planned across the street.

It also has a shopping center … underground parking … lots of condos and is topped with a hotel.

It’s important to note that voters in Agoura Hills are part of the constituency that elects the MRCA … the Mountain Resource Conservation Authority … which tries to reduce development in Malibu.

And inland cities place restrictions on Malibu thru the Coastal Commission.

Malibu gets no say on this project … which has the potential to significantly screw up traffic on a key access road to and from the coast,

Not to mention… the issue of adding a downtown development at the gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area …. totally off limits to people in the mountains and in Malibu.

This story is based on reports from the Acorn newspaper … over the hill.
