Malibu To Beg Sacramento To Bail Out 330 Failing Septic Tanks Or Pits: Imminent Danger To Santa Monica Bay Predicted
There is a dire threat to the Santa Monica Bay from 330 septic tanks and pits along the Malibu coast that were either damaged or destroyed by the Palisades Fire.
Raw sewage and floating debris threatens all of coastal Los Angeles County physically, environmentally, and economically.
That’s the language of an emergency plea that city staff wants to send to the governor … a plea for help.
On Monday night … the city council will consider language to send to Sacramento.
The city wants the governor to issue an executive order requesting federal assistance … and providing direct assistance from the State.
The city describes dire environmental impacts.
330 septic tanks … with human waste … are either leaking or destroyed… with contaminated waste still flowing into the ocean unchecked.
The debris is being washed daily into the ocean from 330 houses. … but there danger is. Particularly acute for oceanfront houses.
Winter wave action along 4-1/2 miles of burned Malibu coast is eating away at the septic tank remnants at 330 houses on the beachfront.
Most of the homes and businesses destroyed by the Palisades Fire on these beaches were supported by timber piles and suspended above the wet beach during normal everyday high tides.
Shoreline protective devices along the fire-affected coastline are destroyed, damaged, insufficient, or absent.
The debris extends beyond these structures (even where they remain) and is exposed to wave action, especially during winter shoreline and swell conditions.
Carbon Beach.
La Costa Beach.
Las Flores Beach.
Big Rock Beach.
Las Tunas Beach.
Topanga Beach.
Warns the city … all of coastal Los Angeles County is potentially threatened physically, environmentally, and economically.
Waves and coastal currents will cause hazardous debris to migrate and ultimately deposit on the beaches within the adjacent communities resulting in an extremely hazardous incident if not removed immediately.
330 septic tanks or effluent pits are exposed and open to the atmosphere.
Many of them are located next to compromised shoreline protection devices or destroyed sea walls.
The City looks forward to any immediate action you can take to protect our community and the environment. The City also requests that any executive order you issue suspend the California Environmental Quality Act and Coastal Act .
Key Trump Envoy Has Coastal Commission In Gunsite
President Donald Trump and conservative allies have to California Coastal Commission in their gunsights.
They call it a crazy woke agency that overlaps local control.
They want it defunded …. And they have California fire aid targeted unless the state complies.
The president’s point man on California disasters is Richard Grenell … a Los Angeles resident.
Grenell is also serving as the president point man on the Ukraine war and cozying up to Vladimir Putin.
Grenell says the White House is looking closely at the California Coastal Commission.
Grenell spoke yesterday in suburban Washington at the CPAC conference … told the audience.
POLITICO 111
“We are going to have strings on the money that we give to California. “They’ve made terrible …
ANCHOR FROM POLITICO: “There are going to be conditions?
“There will be conditions.
“We are talking about those conditions now.
“As a Calijfornian I’m all fir it, because I don’t have faith.
“If we went back and we just gave California hundreds of millions of dollars (then) they are gonna go back to the same old ways of not giving us enough water, having dangerous situations on the ground when it comes to forestry …
“It’s going to happen again.”
The man with the president’s ear on California says … he wants the federal government zero out funding for the Coastal Commission.
And he wants Sacramento to follow.
70992 CPAC STRINGS
“Everyone who’s involved knows that the California Coastal Commission is a disaster, and it needs to absolutely be defunded. And from just a way to think about government, we already have local government making these decisions.
“One person can stop progress. And they’ve made California less safe. I think squeezing their federal funds, making sure they don’t get funds, putting strings on them to get rid of the California Coastal Commission is going to make California better.”
The Coastal Commission was created after California voters overwhelmingly approved of the concept in a 1972 vote … a 58 percent yes vote.
The Commission regulates development along the state’s coastal zones and protects public access to the beach.
Initiated by voters and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in his first term, the 1976 Coastal Act was a response to unregulated shoreline development.
Almost immediately after its passage, beachfront owners and conservative interest groups across the nation began pushing to amend or repeal sections of the law.
Army Completes First Debris Clearance In Malibu, 700+ To Go
The first coastal property in Malibu has been cleared of fire debris by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Elected officials plan a news conference this morning to provide details.
The Army says fire-related ash and debris was removed.
Erosion control measures were built … hydro mulching was applied … sort of a green organic glue that keeps the dirt from washing off.
The Army says its comprehensive approach ensures properties are cleared … and prepared for rebuilding their homes safely.
10 lots have been cleared so far .. out of the 13,579 parcels that need debris scraped away in Malibu, Pacific Palisades and Altadena.
So far … the owners of 488 lots have their paperwork in order for the government to enter their property.
That includes proving they own the property … and giving the Army the right of entry.
10 lots are completed and “final sign off.”
Here in Malibu … about 700 houses burned.
More than 98 percent of the owners are opting for the Army to do the demolition.
The others have the option to hire private construction companies to remove the damaged property.
Governor Ask For $40 Billion For Calif Fire Victims
Gov. Gavin Newsom last night sent a request for $40 billion in federal funding to cover the long-term recovery and rebuilding effort for last month’s devastating Los Angeles fires.
“Make no mistake, Los Angeles will use this money wisely,” Newsom wrote. “California will ensure that funds will serve individuals, communities, property owners, and businesses that suffered losses from these devastating fires.”
Newsom says the federal money is justified.
“California has long been the tentpole of the American economy, a state whose GDP is the fifth largest on the planet and which contributes more tax receipts to the federal government than any other state — by far.
“California’s success is America’s success.”
