A summertime tow-away impound yard may return to Malibu High School … in a parking lot near the Malibu Boys and Girls Club.
The Public Safety Commission has turned down the ideas of putting the impound yard on Point Dume …or at the Malibu Equestrian Center.
Using the city-owned vacant lot on Point Dume … commonly called the Christmas tree lot … was taken off the table first … at the meeting Wednesday night.
That would require paving the lot … a zoning change … and overcoming strong neighborhood opposition.
Next … the Public Safety Commission also decided that the Malibu Equestrian Center parking lot would be a bad idea … it would spook the horses.
Public safety commisisoners Daphne Aneet and Josh Spiegel … at Wednesday public saferty commission … discussed the best three possible sites for the tow yard … the high school … the Malibu Equestrian Center .. or the city owned lot on Point Dume.

DAPHNE ANEET: “I think there is going to ber a lot of community objection I think using the Heathercliff lot.
JOSH SPEIGEL: “There is goign to be a lot of community objection everywhere …. we just have to have the path of least resistance.”
At the public safety commission meeting … member Doug Stewart said at first he liked the idea of using the Equestrian Center parking lot … an area that frankly is deserted much of the time.
The Point Dume Christmas Tree lot as a tow yard was not a good idea … according to Stewart.

“That is such a prized asset to the operation of the coty.
“To use it as a tow yard would almost amount to a sin.
“I think the Riders and Ropers at the Equestrian Center is perhaps the best location … and as you say … the easiest.
But that was before the COmmission after getting an earful from a Trancas Riders and Ropers member who phoned in.
They do not want to give up their space.
In the end … the Public Safety Commission recommended that the student parking lot at Malibu High be the only site … recommended to the city council. It has the right zoning … it’s paved … and it has been used for summertime towaway impounds for years.
The city has already begun asking the school district for a permit.
