PC Greens Is Latest Woolsey Fire Casualty
Written by 991KBU on November 7, 2019
The Woolsey Fire … a depopulated Malibu … and rising rents are conspiring against the only truly locally-owned grocery store in Malibu.
Pacific Coast Greens will close after Sunday.
Everything in the store is marked down 20 to 50 percent.
Yesterday … all of the shelves were still full.
A letter from PC Greens’ owner and founder … Michael Osterman …. thanks the entire Malibu community for the love and support you have given us for the past 27 years.
He says it is with heavy hearts and deep regrets that PC Greens will no longer be able to serve the community as it has.
Surprisingly … P C Greens was not badly hurt by the opening of the Whole Foods Market … at the Malibu Civic Center.
Rather … after the Woolsey Fire but before Whole Foods Market opening … business dropped off with the loss of many longtime customers.
Then came a new landlord and a stiff rent increase.
P C Greens is the last truly locally owned independent market.
Vintage Market at Trancas almost qualifies … but its owner … a wealthy WalMart heiress … is not a Malibu resident.
