Longtime slow growth activist Patt Healy has been ousted from her position … representing Malibu before a commission run by MRCA boss Joe Edmiston.
A man who has been vocal in opposition to Edmiston … Lloyd Ahern … will replace Healy.
Healy for years has been the city’s official representative to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy board …
But city council members said she has never made reports back to the Malibu city council about how the Conservancy and its sister organizations … including the Mountain Recreation and Conservation Authority … the MRCA … were acting.
In his application, Ahern promised to be a more-active proponent of Malibu before the Conservancy, which has an interlocking board of directors with the MRCA. And he promised to report back to the city council regularly.
Healy, a Malibu West resident, has been a steadfast and consistent voice for preserving Malibu’s rural heritage and mission statement. The MRCA has been a consistent effort to open Malibu land to recreational uses, sometimes putting the city and MRCA at cross purposes.
The MRCA is trying to collect millions of dollars in fines against residents in Sycamore Park … who are trying to protect their property … which Edmiston is trying to seize without paying to build a new park access trail.
In fact … last year Healy voted against the city’s express interests .. and against what the city council was saying.
The issue last July was an Edmiston power grab … he wanted broad authority to take actions without board approval … due to the COVID crisis.
City council members Jefferson Wagner and Karen Farrer had just finished testifying against the Edmiston power grab last July … when Healy voted as the city’s official representative to endorse it.
Last night … Bruce Silverstein and Steve Uhring wanted Healy reappointed.
The other city council members praised her conservation ethic… but noted that they have never heard from her about what is happening at the all-important conservancy board meetings.
Farrer and Paul Grisanti pointed out … that Healy has not in recent memory appeared to brief the city council on what the MRCA is up to. Not unrelated, of course, was Healy’s active campaigning for Silverstein and Uhring in the last election.
Ahern promises a much-more in your face presence at the meetings … to let the commissioners hear malibu concerns about property grabs.
With Uhring and Silverstein on Healy’s side … and Karen Farrer and Paul Grisanti behind Ahearn … the final decision-making vote fell to Mikke Pierson.
