Today is the last day to sign up for the L-A County debris removal program.
And there has been a last minute rush to sign up.
Coby Skye .. an assistant director for LA County Department of Public Works … says the need is immediate to clear wrecked properties …. before they become public nuisances.
And Skye says people are still in a state of shock … making it hard for victims to commit to a course of action when they are gathering information up to the last minute.
NEWSCART 03475 DPE CCCC QQQ APPROACH FOR THEIR PROPERTIES.
“It’s a devastating situation for them and we udner stand that.
“And they’re confused about the different options, they have so many options about what will happen to their property if they off in, what their options are, who they can get to help them clear the debris if they decide to do it on their own.
“I think it’s just really an issue of being overwhelmed, and try to find the right approach for their property.”
As of Monday … only 30 percent had signed up.
As of yesterday … more than 50 percent.
NEWSCART 03473 DPW BBBB QQQ ITS NOT TOO LATE
“We are seeing a big uptake as the deadline approaches and we see that with other deadlines you know how people sometimes wait until April 15 to file their taxes. We do want to make sure that people know it’s not too late.”
The LA County Supervisors have set a firm deadline of march 15th to have fire destroyed houses removed … or the county will declare them public nuisances.
In that case … government crews will clear the wreckage and send the bill to the landowner … instead of the state paying for it.
