NPS Says Cougar Who Killed 3 Alpaca Was Not Radio Tracked

Written by on August 7, 2018

The National Park Service says they do not believe any of their currently-tracked mountain lions are responsible for the deaths of three alpacas in Zuma Canyon last week.

Residents say they saw a radio collar on the mountain lion … as it tried to drag off an alpaca on Bonsall Drive.

Ranger Kate Kuynendall tells KBUU News that “None of the animals (they) are currently tracking were in the area at the time of the depredation.

“So it could have been an uncollared lion or possibly a lion wearing a collar that is no longer working, such as P-12. “

In recent months … cougars have been sighted in residential neighborhoods in Malibu Canyon … the Trancas area … Malibu Park and Point Dume.
