Nobu restaurant has been given another reprieve.
Complaints about too many cars .. employees clogging P C H … and multiple violations of its Coastal Use Plan.
Nobu’s neighbors went before the Planning Commission last night to again complain.

“The congestions is horrible the traffic is horrible,
“The staff is still parking on both sides of the street.”
As late as yesterday afternoon … valets were jaywalking and traffic was backed up because of the valets.
Assistant city planner Richard Mollica had pictures of cars blocking traffic lanes … and valets zipping across the road.
Mollica says Nobu was caught … again.

“What was approved did not contemplate offsite parking.
“So right now, they should not be using offsite parking.
“This photo was taken from our code enforcement vehicle.
“And his words, this was a valet attendant who had parked his car across the street, and the point of our picture, as our code enforcement officer observed, is, the valet attendant is not in the crosswalk.”
Attorney Ben Resnick appeared on behalf of the restaurant.
He says that valet may get fired today.
The Nobu lawyer complained that the city staff had ignored Nobu’s effort to communicate.
And he made an offer … to come up with a plan to have 200 cars every day … employees and valet-parked cars … instead parked in nearby office building parking garages.
But Planning Commissioner Kraig Hill says he has dug into some 15 year old Coastal Commission records …
And those parking garages may be in a position to prohibit Nobu from taking over parking that is intended for beach visitors.
Kraig Hill:

“We have a private enterprise, contracting with a private valet company, presumably contracting with the office building themselves, another private company.
“And the suggestion that the visiting serving nature of notebooks somehow makes that completely compliant with the general public requirement of these parking spaces.
“That’s two different things.”
Planning commissioners Steve hearing and John Mazza said they truly value Nobu as a part of the Malibu community.
And they really really want to find a plan to make residence and PCH drivers happy with the high-end restaurant.
But they told Nobu’s lawyer that he has to come up with a plan that is legal.
Bottom line … the Nobu restaurant has until May 20th to come up with legal parking plan.
And the city Planning Commissioners are emphasizing the word legal … something that the restaurant may not be able to provide.
