No Mask? Calabasas Deputies Will Fine You $100. What About Malibu?

In Malibu … like in the rest of California … people are supposed to wear masks.
Supposed to … but not required to.
There is no law requiring people to wear masks in public … in Malibu.
There is such an ordinance in other cities … including Calabasas.
The City of Calabasas has enacted a 100 dollar fine for people who fail to mask their blowholes properly.
West Hollywood has already enacted a similar requirement.
In both of those cities … the ordinance is enforced by the county sheriff’s deputies … who are the hired police force.
L A County Sheriff Alex Villanueva says his deputies are writing tickets to people who violate the West Hollywood mask requirement ordinance.
But the sheriff says his woman and men are not writing those tickets in Malibu.
We don’t have an ordinance requiring masks.
Should we?
Malibu mayor Mikke Pierson says that’s a good question.
He tells KBUU News he thinks the City Council should discuss it and gather more information from the other cities doing this.
Pierson says he has talked to officials in a couple of nearby cities on Friday and both of them have written very few tickets.
Pierson says he would like to know if making mask wearing a requirement … by city ordinance … helps with compliance with the governor’s voluntary request to wear a mask.
