No Major Mud As Big Rains Somehow Steer Around Malibu

Written by on January 17, 2019

Once again ,… it appears that Malibu has lucked out.

Heavy rain is causing freeway flooding and other nuisance in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

Same story to the east of us .. the L-A basin is getting hammered.

But in Malibu … gentle overnight and early morning rain.

Now new mudflows.

No new problems.

PCH stayed open all night … as did Kanan Dume.

Malibu Canyon and Topanga Canyon …. still closed as of 10 this morning.

Numerous heavy showers hit west of us … the Ventura River is at flood stage from Ojai to Ventura.

And to the east … much of the East LA interchange was closed for flooded freeway ramps at 5 this morning.

But most of Malibu got nothing more than gentle rain overnight.

Malibu area rain totals, 24 hours ending 9am:

Decker Canyon 1.69

Malibu Canyon 2.79

Malibu Civic Center 1.79

Big Rock Mesa 1.45

Camp 8 Upper Las Flores 2.72

Topanga Cyn 4.23

The National Weather Service says a full fledged atmospheric river has indeed broken out … pumping millions of tons of water towards California.

Just … not out part of California.

It’s raining at the rate of 1 point 2 inches per hour to the north of us … and Santa Barbara is going to get hit hard.

It looks like about a half inch overnight … with possibilities for another half inch rain today.

Believe it or not .. we could see a mild Santa Ana next weekend … with high temperatures of 80 in the Malibu mountains possible.

Schools are closed for the third day.

Last night  … one person was hurt … and at least one car was totaled  … as three cars got crushed by falling boulders last night on Malibu Canyon Road at the tunnel.

One car was totalled … and one person injured.

Malibu Canyon Road remains closed this morning,.

In Topanga Canyon … a tree and some boulders came falling down onto Topanga Canyon Boulevard.

Topanga Canyon is closed between P C H and Grandview.

In Malibu … no other new road closures overnight.

Sheriffs department checkpoints remain in place… residents only … in Ramirez and Escondido canyons … as well as on Bonsall … Busch and Merritt in Zuma Canyon and eastern Malibu Park.

——

On top of everything else, Malibu got hit by a minor earthquake overnight.

The epicenter was shallow … in the fire-scorched hills

Magnitude 2.8 … epicenter in the mountains west of upper Trancas Creek.
