5 Malibu Residents Have Filed To Protect New Views Across Burned Lots

The Woolsey Fire has given some residents of Malibu an unfair advantage over their neighbors … as it has increased ocean views across land that has burned.
That’s the contention from city staff.
Within the past two months … five Malibu residents have applied for protected view status across their neighbors’ lots … which had burned in the fire.
The city has an ordinance that protects primary view corridors from homes from being blocked by neighbors vegetation if it is over 18 feet high.
People can file for a city establishment of a protected view corridor.
In many cases … that may prevent their burned out neighbors from replacing trees that had burned in the fire … and that had been legal under the view ordinance.
City staff says five Malibu residents have taken advantage of their neighbors’ loss in the fire to apply for a protected view corridor.
The city council is being given two potential options.
Option 1 is to put a temporary hold on view corridors applications within a 1,000- foot radius of the fire affected area.
Option 2 is to require the neighbor to acknowledge l future encroachment by replacement landscaping.
All this goes before the city council Monday.
