New Staircase at Pt Dume Gets Love – Parking Gate Not So Much

Also at the planning commission last night … a plan to replace the creaky staircase that goes down the cliffs at Point Dume
It was approved.
But not before people who live across the street from the nature preserve complained.
Like resident Marianne Riggins …
NEWSCART 77582 DUME RIGGINS QQQ ITS A GOOD OL TIME
“It’s not unusual for people to be there 1, 2, 3, 4 o’clock in the morning, and partying like it’s just a good ol’ time.”
Don Schmitz … a consultant representing homeowners … had a proposal to fix that.
NEWSCART 77581 DUME SCHMITZ :10 QQQ: AT THE ENTRANCE
“How about a gate?
“It doesn’t have to be fancy.
“It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.”
“We believe that this project should be conditioned so that there is a gate for the entrance.”
Don Schmitz.
Even State Parks agreed that was a good idea … but commissioners said tacking the gate onto the new stairway might tempt the coastal commission to reject the entire project.
And … the gate would be in the city street.
State parks can’t build a gate on a city street … especially a city street that is being watched carefully by the California Coastal Commission.
The city may propose the night time gate to the parking lot as a separate project.
