Marketing efforts have begun for the second shopping center in Malibu to be built in 40 years.

Malibu La Paz Ranch is the subject of preconstruction publicity.

The 110-thousand-square-foot project is being built in the midst of a bricks and mortar store recession.

Malls are closing… only two new malls have opened in the past 12 months in all of California.

Even the Third Street Promenade has vacancies.

California Apparel News has a splashy article about the new Malibu shopping center.

Although it will also be about one third offices … 70 thousand square feet of retail will open in two years. and shops … the project is now being portrayed as a retail center, it will be one of the only new retail centers to be constructed in Malibu in more than a decade.

Malibu La Paz also will feature space to picnic, lounge and places where kids can play.

California Apparel News quotes Bryan Gordon … who is runnign the project .. as saying “There’s no real meeting place in Malibu.

“We aim to create a place in Malibu where people can hang out.”

That certainly will come as news to Steve Soboroff … who just built the Whole Food Shopping Center next door … which also features space to picnic, lounge and places where kids can play.

Or the owners of the two similarly-equipped shopping centers across the street … or  Point Dume Village or Trancas Country Market.

And despite all the vacant storefronts in the downtown Malibu malls … the developer tells California Apparel News that his new La Paz mall is intended to serve Malibu residents and people who work in the area.

It wilL open .. he says … in a little more than two years.
