MRCA Tests Soils And Finds No Nuke Residue From Fire

Local soils have been tested for radioactivity by the M R C A  … the Mountains Resource Conservation Authority.

The M R C A owns parkland near the old Rocketdyne test facility near Chatsworth … which was where the Woolsey Fire broke out.

That land includes the site where the old U S Atomic Energy Commission operated a test nuclear generating station … which had a partial meltdown in 1959.

That accident 60 years ago has long been controversial … with some scientists accusing the federal government and the private contractors that ran the generator of a cover-up and of a botched cleanup.

Enter the M R C A … which has purchased land near the reactor site.

They say they have tested soil near the reactor site … at the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve.

Other MRCA areas were also tested.

The M R CA says the did not increase the low-level concentrations of radionuclides … which are  are generally consistent with normal background levels,.

As a result … the M R C A has reopened several parks … including some in Malibu.

The Cameron Nature Preserve at Puerco Canyon and the Sara Wan Trailhead at Corral Canyon.

But Charmlee Wilderness Park in Encinal Canyon will remain closed due to hazardous conditions.

The M R C A also says its controversial park in the Sycamore Park neighborhood of Malibu … which it calls Escondido Canyon Park … is closed due to hazardous conditions.

Homeowners there say that alleged park is an illegal use of their private access road.

The M R C A manages about 75,000 acres of parkland in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including those belonging to Santa Monica Conservancy.
