County Makes Major Error On Malibu Ballots, Flub May Hurt School Bond
A major screwup on your election ballot: the county mistakenly said voters in Malibi can vote on the Santa Monica school bind election. And vice versa … that oters in Santa Monica can vote on the Malibu bond issue.
The mistake wasn’t discovered until the erroneous ballots started arriving in people’s mailboxes.
The Santa Monica- Malibu school district has been split into two separate “facilities districts” … with only voters in each facilities district are eligible to cast ballots for their own area.
Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan stated he takes “full responsibility for this error. Although we cannot modify the voting materials at this stage, we will ensure that only votes cast by eligible voters within the defined SFID boundaries are reported and certified.”
But this mistake means that voters have been told … on their ballots … that two school bonds will affect their taxes.
County elections officials say they think they can fix this … by counting only Malibu voters’ ballots in the Malibu tally … and only Santa Monica voters’ ballots for the Santa Monica tally.
But the election ballot materials being mailed out right now are wrong – and they my sway some voters to think that Santa Monica’s taxes would be imposed on Malibu properties.
L A County registrar recorder Dean Logan is refusing to say anything more … opting instead to hide behind the one page press release.
School district officials are researching election law … and looking at court decisions to precedent.
This error is so unusual … and bound supporters fear it might be devastating to a school community that needs a 55 percent supermajority to pass the bond issue.
The margin for error is small … and a mistake like this may sink the bed issue.

“So sometimes we have earthquake droughts, where we don’t get many and sometimes we have a lot. It can just be that we are in a period where we have a lot.
“But at the same time … I can’t really rule out … because I don’t have any information to rule out … that this may be indicative of something else.”

Salmon Wait One Week Before Swimming Past Removed Dam
In northern California and southern Oregon … four dams on the Klamath river were demolished this summer.
Last Thursday … the first salmon in more than 100 years swam into waters formerly blocked by dams.
Scientists with the nonprofit California Trout have a sonar camera pointing onto the river where Iron Gate Dam once stood … just south of the California-Oregon border.
The dam was removed last month.
On Thursday the camera captured what was almost certainly a chinook salmon migrating. The San Francisco Chronicle reports it was a big one … roughly 2½-feet long.
That fish is thought to be part of the Klamath River’s fall run.
Since the early 1900s, the construction of four hydroelectric dams has kept fish from swimming to hundreds of miles of upstream waterways in what was once the third-largest salmon-producing river in the West.
The lack of access to these cold waters for spawning is one of the reasons for the steady demise of California’s iconic salmon population.
At 10:06 p.m. Thursday, the sonar camera at the site recorded a fish swimming upriver .. according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The same story might be about to unfold on Malibu Creek.
Rindge Dam is about to get broken up and hauled away.
Within 6 years … the state hopes to open 18 miles of Malibu Creek habitat to fish … swimming up from the ocean.
