MHS Grapples With Class and Race Issues, 1 Week After Video Surfaces
Written by 991KBU on May 22, 2019
Malibu High School students will be brought into an assembly today … as the school continues to deal with an ugly playground brawl that had ugly racist and class overtones.
The school district’s Restorative Justice effort has been working behind the scenes since video of the incident surfaced more than a week ago.
In the video … a group of students scuffled on the basketball court.
People were spit on … racial epithets were exchanged.
And one white kid taunted a black kid … that he would kill him … or at least have his father kill him.
Rumors are that several students were disciplined … but privacy laws prevent any disclosure of the official decisions.
Principal Chelli Nye says the investigation of the incident is ongoing … and that the school district is continuing efforts to gather accurate information about the entire picture of the incident … and what led up to it.
The principal says she is addressing concerns about student behavior, supervision and school-wide climate.
The assembly today will address safety and remind students about rules.
The climate at the school will be aired.
And students will be reminded of their ability to talk to adults on campus … or at the on-campus Wellness Center.
The Restorative Justice advisors are using discussion circles … to listen to kids and to assure them that their voices matter.
These discussions include the students who were immediately involved … as well as the whole school.
