MHS Buckles Down To Reboot COVID Classwork: More Learning, Less Distance

Written by on August 17, 2020

Malibu High School will be very different this fall … even different from last spring.

The school … like others in the U-S .. lurched into distance learning with very little preparation.

And in the eyes of some parents … it was a disaster.

Principal Patrick Miller told parents on Friday that the Spring model … of holding mass classes by subjects … has been abandoned.

As Miller put it … this limited the teacher’s ability to have a reasonable number of students in each virtual class meeting.

In some cases teachers were reluctant to host a virtual class due to the high numbers.

For fall, Malibu High kids will have a block schedule.

They will be expected to be in class at a certain time … the next class after that … the next class after that.

Students are expected to arrive at their virtual class meetings on time appropriately dressed for school.

Attendance will be taken each period.

Miller says he virtual session will look more like what an in person class would be.

teachers are back at school today … for a week of learning how this will work

Last spring … classes were Credit/No Credit.

Some parents and students felt this reduced motivation to work hard.

For fall, traditional letter grades will be issued once again,

In person classes start Monday.
