National Trails Day is Saturday.
There are two events here in Malibu … where volunteers can help maintain our network of trails in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
The 500 miles of trails in the recreation area are the main attraction for most of the park visitors.
In Zuma Canyon … volunteers are needed to help pluck one of the most threatening weeds in the Santa Monica Mountains is carnation spurge.
It not only pushes out native plants, but are toxic to animals and humans.
There’s a big patch of the invading weeds in Zuma Canyon.
Volunteers have been steadily pecking away at the weeds for years.
This Saturday … another group will start at the Bonsall Drive parking lot at 9 a.m. to 1noon.
There will be cookies.
Up in Malibu canyon … rangers will lead volunteer crews in maintaining the roads and trails at Malibu Creek State Park.
Activities there will include installing water diversions, removing vegetation, and bridge repair. This event is supported by California State Parks, the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council, and the Santa Monica Mountains Task Force of the Sierra Club.
They will meet at the main parking lot at the state park in Malibu Canyon … near Mulholland Highway…
That event goes from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
