Malibu On Its Own Now For School Fundraising

Written by on August 30, 2018

Santa Monica school officials are getting ready to divorce Malibu … and Malibu will soon be on its own to support its schools.

Negotiations continue behind closed doors … between the city of Malibu and Santa Monica school officials … over specifics of a divorce agreement.

But fundraising for basic school activities has already been split.

Basic programs like science and technology … and so-called extras like arts and athletics … are funded by parent contributions.

And for the last decade … the school board has required those to go through a district-wide effort … the Santa Monica Malibu education foundation.

The idea was to equalize funding between the rich I am in the Malibu schools and some less well off Schools in Santa Monica.

It backfired … spectacularly.

Malibu parents ignored the foundation … resulting in the Santa Monica schools subsidizing Arts and science programs in Malibu.

Not after this year … as the school board has already split Malibu out of the foundation.

Santa Monica Malibu school spokeswoman Gail Pinsker says it’s an amicable split … until Malibu can get on its own feet.

NEWSCART 77695 PINSKER SMEF AAA:

“Staff from the Santa Monica Educational Foundation are working closely with several leaders from the Shark Fund at this time to understand the processes and plans and fundraising and outreach methods that they have used, so that they can in

tUrn create something effective and valuable to Malibu families.”

The Malibu high shark fund … Athletic boosters … Arts angels and elementary school PTSAs will have to raise about $200,000 this year to make up for the subsidies that had been coming from the Santa Monica parents.

PINSKER SMEF BBB :20 QQQ: FOR ITS OWN STUDENTS.

“Malibu has a big job but I know they are up for the task in that they are always very supportive of their students in Malibu schools, so we’re really excited and looking forward to what Malibu can do for its own students.”

Santa Monica school spokeswoman Gail Pinsker.

The local school fundraisers have been named a charity cosponsor of this year’s Malibu chili cook off… now being run by the Malibu Boys and Girls Club.

The carnival begins Friday with locals night.

It continues through Labor Day at the Malibu Civic Center … and this year a cut of the funds goes directly to local schools.
