Malibu High Construction Delays Go To School Board
Written by 991KBU on July 31, 2019
The opening of all the new buildings under construction at Malibu High School is being pushed back to the start of the 2020-2021 school year.
The steel skeleton for the new front of the campus is rising.
The McCarthy Companies has a 58 million dollar contract for the current segment of the project.
District officials say the Malibu High project was significantly delayed due to the Woolsey Fire.
Also … the following rain, mudflows, flooding, and subsequent damage restoration and clean-up.
And the district says they have discovered previously unknown PCBs … and removing those has have resulted in additional construction delays.
Construction at the Point Dume campus of Malibu Elementary School also continues.
And the discovery of discolored soil — darker than what was expected — is prompting some additional work.
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School board will meet tomorrow to discuss the finding.
District officials are recommending spending about 25 thousand dollars to provide special inspection services.
The soil is described as saturated and dark … and further testing is necessary to investigate why.
The school board will meet at 5:30 tomorrow evening in the district headquarters …. at 16th Street and Olympic Boulevard in Santa Monica.

The first day of school this year is in three weeks and one day … on August 22nd.
