$12,500 Malibu Foundation Grant Will Fund KBUU Solar Powered Transmitter

Written by on May 20, 2019

The Malibu Foundation has announced it will contribute the cost of converting KBUU’s transmitter to solar power.

The foundation is contributing 12 thousand 5 hundred dollars to KBUU’s nonprofit operating corporation.

The radio station has been limping along on gas generators since the Woolsey Fire destroyed the structures at Rancho Del Cielo … where the transmitter is located.

No buildings … no power meter.

The gas generators are expensive and cause pollution  … and the Southern California Edison power reconnection has been delayed at L A County Regional Planning.

Malibu residents … and listeners from across the nation … have contributed towards the costs of the gasoline and generators.

With the grant … KBUU can begin construction of the solar panels and batteries this summer.

The Malibu Foundation has been launched by members of the community including Miley Cyrus, the Happy Hippie Foundation, Liam Hemsworth, Evelin Weber, Alice Bamford, Ann Eysenring, Joe Flanigan, Rory Kennedy, Kelly Meyer, Trevor Neilson and others.

Donations have ranged from 61 cents from a small rural town in India …. to a half million dollar check from Malibu resident Miley Cyrus.

The foundation supports programs in areas impacted by the Woolsey Fire including Agoura Hills, Oak Park, Thousand Oaks, West Hills, Calabasas, Malibu and other areas.

The foundation has held rock concerts and other fundraisers …. and is sponsoring major rebuilding efforts on both sides of the mountains.

After making grants to individuals who were financially affected by the fire … the Malibu Foundation is now moving to phase two.

Affected communities like the devastated Seminole Hot Springs mobile home park are getting  professional help, such as lawyers, case managers, union organizers and mental health professionals.

Their mantra… nobody should be a victim twice.
