Major Crime Up 27% In Malibu In July – Car Thefts Up 66% – City has Increased Spending

Major crimes in Malibu are up 27 percent … and grand theft auto has tripled.
33 cars stolen in the first seven months of this year … only 11 in the similar period last year.
Theft from locked vehicles … up 50 percent.
As bad as that is .. the level of those crimes tapered off in July.
And residential burglaries are down substantially.
The sheriff’s office usually attends the city’s Public Safety Commission meetings … the next one is tonight at 5.
And tomorrow night at 6 … sheriff Alex Villanueva will attend a community meeting.
The sheriff has on the past ignored invitations to have the public sessions at Malibu City Hall.
Instead .. he will be at Duke’s Restaurant … from 6 to 8 tomorrow night.
The meeting will be live streamed on the Malibu Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/LostHillsSheriffsStation.
Although the sheriff’s budget has been cut in L A County … that has not affected the Malibu payments to the sheriff’s office … or staffing levels here.
In fact … Malibu has hired additional deputies this year .. adding two deputies five days per week as requested by the sheriff’s liaison.
