Lights out … Malibu.
The city has a new dark skies ordinance …. but it won’t take effect until October 15th.
The city council unanimously approved the new rules last night.
The ordinance has been 20 years in the making.
Backer Cami Winikoff heads a group that has been negotiating with local agencies for 5 years … and she says malibu will become the leader … once again … in an environmental issue.
NEWSCART 77526 LIGHTS WINIKOFF :14 QQQ: up and down the coast.
“On these last five years we have worked closely with the Coastal Commission on the Malibu High School parking lot project, and they are looking forward to us bringing forth a dark sky presentation, with the hope of expanding these ideas up and down the coast.”
Not everyone is happy. Homeowner Brian Wilson testified.
NEWSCART 77527 LIGHTS BRIAN WILSON :14 QQQ: STREETS … OUR CHILDREN.
“This dark sky ordinance?
“No!
“Number one … the lighting is more important for the safety of our streets … our children.”
And lawyer John Heinz (phonetic) .. representing Nobu Restaurant … also objected.
NEWSCART 77528 lights John Heinz :13 QQQ: Will be shut down at night.
“We are concerned that outdoor dining areas along P C H … from Moonshadows to Paradise Cove … in between … including Nobu … including the pier and others … will be shut down at night.”
But city council members said they are always there to adjust the dark skies ordinance … if it needs it.
Nearly every external light in the city will need some adjustment … once the ordinance kicks in … and city council members voted to delay the effective date to October 15th to give people time to get into compliance.
