Law Firm Suing SC Edison For Some Malibu Residents Gets Kicked Off Case
Written by 991KBU on June 3, 2019
A law firm that is representing numerous Malibu fire victims has been knocked off the case by the judge in Superior Court.
The legal website Law 360 dot com reported the story over the weekend.
According to Law 360 dot com … Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan was disqualified from handling the case … because one of its lawyers had been trying to represent Southern California Edison in lawsuits stemming from the 2017 fire in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
Edison argued that Quinn Emanuel “abruptly switched sides” and began representing wildfire victims … according to the law 3-60 report.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge William F. Highberger ruled that Edison likely shared confidential information with the Quinn Emanual law firm in meetings that have a “substantial relationship” to this case.
During the meeting and in strategy follow-up calls after, the firm and SCE discussed potential defense arguments against people filing claims from that fire.
Legal ethics prohibit a law firm from using confidential information from one case … in another.
The Quinn Emanuel law firm was selected by volunteer group of fire victims to represent Malibu fire victims … because it cut its fees and made other promises.
Bruce Silverstein … a former attorney who helped negotiate the package deal … issued a statement this weekend on Facebook.
He says the lawsuits filed by the Quinn Emanual law firm will continue in court … as the matter is appealed.
This news was reported by Law 3-60 dot com … and we will have the link to their article posted at the KBUU Newswire later this morning
