LAPD Pulling Down Second PCH Checkpoint, After Having Forgotten It Was There

Written by on March 27, 2025

Los Angeles police will immediately remove their eastbound checkpoint on Pacific Coast Highway, at Coastline Drive, this morning, according to a high ranking Malibu official.

Sheriff’s Capt. Jennifer Seetoo today told KBUU News that LAPD agrees the second stop was unneeded, as every vehicle stopped there has already been cleared six miles earlier at the sheriff’s checkpoint in Malibu.

The suggestion came from a Malibu resident last night, at the Wednesday town hall sponsored by the City of Malibu.

They asked if the checkpoint was superfluous, and it turns out LAPD had placed it there for a mudslide in February and forgotten about it, Seetoo said.

This morning, LAPD agreed to remove the eastbound checkpoint, which sits 6 miles down the road from the sheriff’s department identical checkpoint, on the highway.

Malibu drivers have been chafing at the delays at the second checkpoint, which duplicated the “pass check” at Carbon Beach Terrace. There is no other access to PCH in the 6 miles between the sheriff’s checkpoint and the LAPD checkpoint, at the Los Angeles city limits.

The change was set into motion  when a person asked Seetoo about the checkpoints at Wednesday night’s public forum. A sheriff’s sergeant mistakenly replied that there was only one eastbound checkpoint, but a Malibu reporter alerted Seetoo to the mistake, and she said she would check with her counterparts in LAPD.

This morning, LAPD replied they had no idea of the duplication in effort, and told Seetoo they would immediately remove the National Guard soldiers and two LA cops manning the checkpoint.

Another suggestion from the public also appeared to gan traction from the public forum: a suggestion that public buses and school buses get an express lane to bypass lines of traffic waiting to clear the checkpoint at Cahutauqua Boulevard in Los Angeles, heading towards Malibu.

Seetoo asked anyone with other suggestions or questions to contact her via the KBUU social media pages at Facebook or Nextdoor.
