L A county planners are drafting a new land use plan for the Santa Monica Mountains.
Or at least the northern part of the mountains … generally north of Mulholland Highway.
A packed meeting room last night in Calabasas … as the massive plan rewrite began with a public scoping session.
Some residents described the urban pressures on the mountains … the creeping urban development heading towards Malibu.
Others said they hope that LA County would not repeat restrictions made by the California coastal commission on the southern part of the mountains … next to Malibu.
The Local Coastal Plan … the L-C-P … as banned new horse corrals … and vineyards … in the part of the mountains where Coastal has jurisdiction.
County planner Anita Gutierrez tells KBUU the county plan for th enorthenr half is different.
NEWSCART 77682 LA COUNTY 1111 QQQ AS FRIENDLY AS POSSIBLE TO THE EQUESTRIANS
“We’ve already committed to the public that we will be a lot friendlier to the equestrians then the LCP was.
“In the LCP we had to go through coastal commission and for the north area we do not it’s strictly up to the Board of Supervisors.
“And the board has committed to be as friendly as possible to the equestrians.”
But what about vineyards??
Because of drought conditions … L A county has banned the planting of new grapevines countywide.
Some vineyards in Truinfo Canyon violated that rule … and are being removed.
Gutierrez tells KBUU that the new proposed plan does not change that.
NEWSCART 77680 LA COUNTY 2222 :14 QQQQ THEY ARE PROHIBITED.
“Currently there is nothing proposed to further those restrictions or lessen them, it’s kind of where it is now that’s the current situation.
“In the LCP they are prohibited.”
The new land use plan … from L-A County for the Santa Monica Mountains … is being watched closely by residents of the Lake Malibou … Cornell … Agiura Hills and Calabasas areas.
They concerned about too many houses popping up along kanan Road .. and other corridors.
Mary Ann Rush … one activist from over the hill … says they need the help of Malibu residents.
NEWSCART 77681 LA COUNTY 333 :24 QQQQ OF MOUNTAIN HAS A HOUSE ON IT.
“Have some of your citizens come, which I actually have somebody from Malibu coming tonight to speak,
“And they gave the perspective for what you guys have.
“It’s people from the industry in town the movie studios coming home because they live out here and how they’re so happy to see the mountains when they get here and they’re so happy that the mountains aren’t destroyed like they are down in San Diego, (where) every single mountain has a house on it.”
Mary Ann Rush is a community activist with a group called PRISM … residence on the other side of the hill who are dedicated to preventing development along the quarters that lead to the Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu.
The new L-A County land use planning for the Santa Monica Mountains is just beginning … we will keep you posted as it progresses along.
