Malibu Road Residents Again Voice Beach Crime Fears

Residents along Malibu Road are worried about people on the beach .. under their houses. 

At last night’s city council meeting … property owner Ryan Drexler said he repeatedly calls sheriff’s deputies to deal with apparent transients … drinking on the beach right under his house.

“The beach has become a very serious problem. These men are very brazen. They don’t want to leave. I’ve called the sheriffs department many times. Most of these people are drinking.”

At last nighty’s city council meeting … sheriff’s Lt Dustin Carr did not address that particular complaint. 

But he said crackdowns on drinking liquor in public… sleeping in cars … and other minor crimes at city parks and beaches is getting direct attention from the sheriff’s office.

“We’ve been doing additional patrol checks at Bluffs Park… Especially at night. It appears that the overnight problem… The overnight parking problem has cleared out.

“People were having problems with people drinking outside Legacy Park. I believe it was Saturday we arrested somebody for drinking in public there. And we are going to continue to do enforcement there to keep that park nice and clean for the public.”

Details Emerge On 2 Fatal PCH Crashes In 2 Weeks, But Kanan-Dume Victim Is Still “John Doe #399”

Two weeks after a fatal car crash at the corner of PCH at Kanan Dume Road … we still don’t have a name for the man who caused it.

The Los Angeles county coroner tells KBUU news of the body is being referred to as John Doe Number 399.

Sheriffs deputies say the motorcyclist who was injured in that crash is recovering and is in good spirits.

You may have seen his helmet cam video of the Lexus sedan hurtling through the red light on Kanan Dume … smashing into an oncoming pickup truck … which in turn spun into the stopped motorcyclist.

Santa Monica police yesterday revealed details about two major crashes on PCH over the long Thanksgiving weekend.

They are confirming now that a bicyclist was killed on PCH near the McClure Tunnel … in Santa Monica … at 4 a-m Thanksgiving morning.

A Tesla heading towards the freeway hit a bicyclist … who was dead at the scene.

No name has been released. 

Traffic was blocked off at Entrada …. Causing. Major Thanksgiving morning traffic jam.

Two days later … some genius managed to smash through palisades park … where Montana Avenue ends … and drive over the cliff. 

Two people inside the car … they had bene drinking.

The car went about 50 feet through the park and then partly down the cliff towards the coast highway.  

The two people had minor injuries … and were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

A crane was called in to remove the vehicle from the cliff.

The driver was subsequently cited for felony DUI.

Silverstein and Uhring Again Lose 3-2, This Time Denied Seat At Table As Consultants Review Planning Dept Record

The political divisions that have split the Malibu city council for two years were on full display last night … which was the last regular voting meeting for Karen Farrer and Mikke Pierson.

Last night … the issue was hiring a consultant firm to examine what is going on in the Planning Department.

Widespread complaints about delays and unreasonable requirements have overwhelmed city council members …. especially in the four years since the Woolsey Fire. 

It was another 3 to 2 vote … and like most controversial issues over the past two years… Bruce Silverstein and Steve Uhring were on the losing end.  

Uhring and Silverstein wanted changes … they wanted to sit in on monthly meetings with the consultant.

Mayor Paul Grisanti objected to that … the idea was for the council to find out what went wrong by talking to unhappy residents … not to city council members.,

“You’re asking them for a minimum of six additional meeting.

“If they were going to have more meetings, I would like them to have more meetings with members of the public who have actually gotten permits. The proposal says they’re going to be 12.

“I would have no problem coming up with 12 people who have would have serious opinions all by myself. And I know that the rest of us who been getting emails from people asking for help with their problems could easily come up with at least that many as well.”

Silverstein and Uhring said they have a problem with a consultant trying to provide the city with what the city staff wants to hear.

“The concern is that we’re going to get some kind of white-washed product from a professional consultation company that works for one city after another … and depends on pleasing cities … to get hired again to do another project.”

But the council majority shot that down.

Mikke Pierson said fixing the PlanningDepartment cannot wait one month.

“This is an item I wanted it since our last City Manager. so whether your ides sound fine, Bruce and Steve still I think this should move forward.

“To me this is a process that is long overdue — that you know we need to make progress — on so I’m in favor of this item.”

But Silverstein and Uhring felt that at least one member of the city council should sit in on monthly meetings with the consultant … Uhring said he did not want to consultant to pull any punches. 

Uhring said his business background … as a consultant and as someone being analyzed … makes him qualified for that.

Last night … Grisanti questioned that.

UHRING:  “Paul, have you ever done this before? I have. I’ve done it a number of times.”

GRISANTI, INTERRUPTING, VOICE RISING: “No see if I’ve never done this before. I’ve never consulted any consultants Steve.

UHRING, INTERRUPTING: “that I’m going to help you out. I’m going to help you out.

GRISANTI, INTERRUPTING: “Steve, I was being facetious.”

UHRING: “Paul I understand. I’m not arguing about.  I am ooking for them to give me answers that I agree with answers and making progress they come up with what we need to have at the end ti improve this. 

“This probably is the most important thing we’re gonna do over the next six months.”

In the end… This bickering over adding additional meetings to the consultant contract meant nothing.

The consultant, Jay Trevino, said his firm would be happy to add additional meetings… If that’s what the majority of the city Council wanted.”

“We would be happy to have periodic meetings with an ad hoc committee or whomever the council would designate.

“I can assure you that we will pull no punches in our assessment. I can understand why that is a concern. 

“We will, after doing a very exhaustive review in talking with customers — stakeholders in Malibu — we will have a very clear understanding of what the problems are in your development process.

“And we will focus on recommendations on how to fix those problems.”

At the end … the City Council voted 3 to 2 to go ahead with the deep dive into the planning department right now … and then let the next City Council decide how to oversee the Planning Department review.

Malibu School Christmas Lot Opens Thursday

Ttoday is Tuesday, November 29 and that means Christmas tree season is here.

The question already out there:  when can I buy a Christmas tree from the Malibu high school booster club?

Their lot will open on Thursday, December 1 down at the chili cook off site of the Malibu Civic Center.

They will be selling fresh trees between 3 and 7 PM most days … until 8 o’clock Friday night and Saturday night.

They are not only selling trees… But Malibu ornaments… Malibu apparel… Malibu middle school and Malibu high school logo stuff.

The store opens Thursday at three in the afternoon Thursday at three and is open for the next 10 days …. at the chili cook off site.
