Malibu just took an enormous step backwards in being an environmental leader in California.

The city council last night rejected moving everyone in the city into a 100 percent renewable electric power supply. At least … a default of all-renewable electric power supply.  Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/malibu-abandons-100percent/

Southern California Edison officials appeared before an unhappy Malibu city council last night.  And the beleaguered power company changes its story … again … over whether it issued warnings to the city that it would shut off power intentionally to the city.  A company spokesman tells KBUU … they simply blew the forecast.

Balloon industry representatives … balloon artists … and balloon retailers from across Southern California descended on Malibu City Hall last night.

From as far away as Newport beach.

Their goal: derail a proposal in the Malibu City Council to ban balloon sales in Malibu.

And … they succeeded … somewhat.

The ordinance was sent back for more research … to possibly exempt the sales of balloons if they are 100 percent biodegradable.

In news on the Round Up front ….

A San Francisco judge on Monday drastically reduced the damages award that a jury decided Monsanto had to pay a former school groundskeeper who contracted cancer after spraying the popular weed killer Roundup for years.

the judge reduced the award from $289 million to to $78.5 million … according to th Sna Francisco Chronicle.

Jurors actually showed up. this was despite an extraordinary lobbying effort by jurors to persuade the judge to maintain their original ruling.

Round up … is a weed killer … it is banned for sale in Malibu.

And the city prohibits using its use on public property.

But private property owners may buy it elsewhere … and state law prohibits Malibu from making it illegal to use here.

Dewayne “Lee” Johnson of Vallejo was a groundskeeper. His job included spraying Monsanto’s herbicide glyphosate from 50-gallon drums 20 to 30 times a year for two to three hours a day. He got terminal cancer.

In news from off the coast … the New York Times reports that California’s aggressive pursuit of a carbon-free electric grid is heading offshore.

The federal government has taken the first steps to enable companies to lease waters in Central and Northern California for wind projects.
