In news from down the coast … the metamorphosis of the old Sears building at the McClure tunnel has begun.
The former department store next is now going to become a mixed office, retail and food business called Mark 302.
It’s part of that plan from what’s left of the Sears/Kmart Company to dump it’s failing retail stores and use the valuable real estate for 21st-century purposes.
The Santa Monica daily press reports at the old store we’ll undergo a seismic retrofit … which will preserve the exterior largely intact.
Some window space will be increased … and the interior opened up with substantial changes.
The basement and first floor will be converted into a food and retail area … the second and third floors will become office space.
The iconic building … at the gateway to Malibu … will provide office tenants with an abundance of indoor and outdoor space, spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, and a vibrant mix of street-level restaurants and retail…. says the developer.
How that affects the third street promenade is an open question.
The decline of American retail .. Plus high rents .. has driven some stores out.
And for the first time in 30 years … brokers say they are seeing empty storefronts on third street.

Back in Malibu …. on Zuma Beach … temporary pavilions …tents and scaffolds for the Malibu Triathlon are going up.
The annual fundraiser for children’s hospital of Los Angeles will be at Zuma Beach Saturday and Sunday.
Up to 5000 participants expected.
There is a running marathon … a bicycle race … and a swimming competition … the three legs of the triathlon.
Once again … Pacific Coast Highway Will be the venue from Zuma Beach west to past Broad beach.
You can expect thousands of vehicles to arrive at five in the morning Sunday …
And access to neighborhoods like Malibu West and Broadbeach Will be restricted for a short time.
Access to the Malibu Park neighborhood will be available at all times via Bonsall Drive.

Services have been scheduled for a Malibu parent who died of cancer.
Sky Kunerth was remembered at last night’s AMPS meeting … as a dedicated mom to her daughter Ashlyn … and wife to her husband … Mark.
A vigil will be held tomorrow evening at 7 at Our Lady of Malibu Church.
Funeral mass for Sky Kuneth will be said at 10:30 Saturday morning at Our Lady Of Malibu.
And a celebration of her life is scheduled for Sunday,
