A whale … a small one … has beached itself at Zuma Beach late last night.
The whale was spotted at about midnight.
The witness who spotted it last night consulted a chart and said the whale looked like an adult “pygmy sperm whale.”
Bystanders tell KBUU News they called the sheriff’s office … they said to call the California Wildlife Center … which was of course closed for the night.
The sheriff did not tell the caller to call the fire department … which could dispatch lifeguards or perhaps find the California Wildlife Center in the middle of the night.
It was at first spotted thrashing around in the surf line.
By 8:45 it had beached itself.
The California Wildlife Center crew consulted vets at Sea Wrold, who told them this whale sounded very poor, and that pygmy sperm whales do very poorly in confinement.
The animal was euthanized.
The carcass will be examined at the L A Natural History Museum.

Two Santa Monica Malibu Unified School Board members are applying to become Santa Monica city council members.
The City Council there gets to pick a person to serve on the council … because Tony Vazquez has won a seat of the state Board of Equalization.
76 people have submitted applications … hoping to be picked.
School board members Maria Leon-Vazquez and Oscar de la Torre included…. According to the Santa Monica lookout newspaper.
Maria Leon Vazquez has been under a cloud … as the district attorney reportedly has been investigating her for financial self dealing.
She voted on contracts that benefitted her husband … the one who just got electted to the state office.
Oscar de la Torre has sued the city of Santa Monica in a voting rights lawsuit …
If de la Torre or Leon Vasquez get appointed to the city council … that would open up a seat on the seven member Santa Monica Malibu unified school District board.
But as we said … there are 76 applicants for the one seat.
All of this Santa Monica political intrigue has a dribble down effect on the Malibu school board.
We will keep you posted.
