Malibu’s Only Local Daily News from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning.

——

We start today’s newscast with an editorial note.

The news is scary.

There are rumors.

Here at KBUU … it is our job to separate rumor from news.

You may have heard the rumors about a COVID-19 medical case in Malibu.

We have heard them.

We have reported them.

Three nongovernment sources have told us the same information.

The government will not confirm or deny.

Federal privacy laws are getting in the way of verifying what appears to be reliable fact … with government officials.

This newscast must balance the need to avoid inciting panic … with the very real facts that are developing in our neighborhood … our city  … our world.

With that in mind … here is today’s news.

  • A staggering projected death toll in Malibu – if the Chinese death rate is applicable here.
  • A Malibu resident is self-isolating in her Malibu home.
  • Malibu schools are not cancelling events yet.

In other news …  after years of discussion … the city council last night required that commercial properties in Malibu be required to have their garbage bins locked and sealed.

The idea is to prevent rats from stealing food … rats who then have to be poisoned … presenting a risk to beneficial wild animals.

Garbage haulers say their rates  will have to go up to pay the extra labor costs.

But the city council avoided the tackling a bigger issue … the City of Malibu does not regulate rates charged by commercial garbage haulers.

A cold upper level low pressure system off the So Cal coast will continue to interact with subtropical moisture to generate moderate to locally heavy rainfall across the region today through tonight.

This storm will bring a threat of thunderstorms, including the possibility of strong storms to Southwest California today into tonight.

The greatest threat will be during the afternoon and evening hours when the atmosphere destabilizes.

Any thunderstorms that develop will have the potential to produce brief heavy

rainfall, with rainfall rates locally up to 1 inch per hour. In addition, thunderstorms will be capable of producing small hail, wind gusts to 45 mph, and dangerous cloud to ground lightning.

Conditions will also be favorable for isolated waterspouts over the coastal waters today, which can always come ashore as a small tornado.

Rain totals are expected to be about an inch to 1.5 inches for the coast and valleys of L.A. County, with anywhere from 1.5 inches to 3 inches in the foothills and mountains.

Rain rates of up to 1 inch per hour are possible in fast-moving thunderstorm cells. Rain will taper off to scattered showers on Wednesday.
