- = 61 mile per hour winds blast Paradise Cove.
- = About 80 homes lose their power to tree branches in the lines.
- = And over on Broad Beach … 88 houses had a long cold night due to an intentional power outage.
- = A head-on crash on PCH traps one person in the wreckage.
- = And the planning commission discovers that deciding a project is not “jackaroundable” is not exactly a precise legal term.

Malibu’s Planning Commissioners have found out the hard way it does not pay to make complicated decisions in the middle of the night. And inventing new words in an official vote may not be such a good idea either. The president’s State of the Union address is tonight.
Malibu’s two local congress members … Ted Lieu and Julia Brownley … are both bringing guests to the House chambers to make political points.
Ted Lieu this year is bringing former Olympic gold medal swimmer Gary Hall, Jr. Like Rep. Lieu, Gary is living with a pre-existing condition.
At one time, Gary was the fastest swimmer in the world but struggled to afford insulin for his type-1 diabetes.
Their hope is that, during the State of the Union, the President will support Democrats’ efforts to lower prescription drug prices, and protect individuals with pre-existing conditions.
Congresswoman Julia Brownley represent the very western and northern sections of Malibu.
Her guest at the State of The Union address tonight … a mother who lost her son at the Borderline shooting one year ago.
Susan orofonos lost her son Telemchus … one of 12 peoplke gunned down by the madman in Thousand oaks.
She made this tearful statement that morning … as recorded by ABC News.
NEWSCART 75423
The State of the Union speech will be the first ever delivered by an impeached president during his trial.

Another bad crash on PCH last night … near Mugu Rock.
It was a head on crash … at about 330 yesterday afternoon …
A three-vehicle crash on Pacific Coast Highway just east of the Thornill Broom beach parking lot.
One eprson was trapped in the wreckage.
A chopper was called in … as firefighters cut apart the wreckage to cut one person out of the crash.
Crews at the scene ultimately decided the patients could be transported by ground ambulance.
And two patients were ultimately found to have suffered only minor injuries, according to CHP.
Two vehicles had major front-end damage and a third vehicle also required a tow truck. Traffic was delayed in both directions for a time around the crash site.

Voters in Malibu who have asked for vote by mail ballots will get those starting this week.
And that means some of us will be making our decisions in the Democratic primary as soon as a few days from now.
Democrats in California have an open primary.
That means independent voters can cross over and vote in the democratic party presidential primary.
Republicans have chosen a closed primary … the GOP‘s state and national leaders do not allow independent voters to choose betwen Doanld Trump and his six Republican opponents.
Their decision bans California’s 5.4 million so-called “independent” voters from casting primary ballots for President Trump or any of his six challengers in the March 3 statewide election.
And with results from the Iowa causcuses all screwed up…. eyes are turning to the California primary in just four weeks.
More than 15 million California ballots are being mailed and we are expecting to see a ton come back in the first week or 10 days.
A technical meltdown in Iowa Monday night set off bedlam in the critical first contest for the Democratic presidential nomination, triggering competing claims of victory and stoking doubts about the legitimacy of the eventual outcome.

The fate of the John Muir Woods mural on Lincoln Boulevard has yet to be officially decided by leaders of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
The landmark … long visible to motorists between Malibu and LAX … is peeling and faded.
Artist Jane Golden tells the Santa Monica daily Press that the art piece is irreparable and must be replaced.
The SMMUSD board meeting asked the artist to host a series of meetings last week, which sought to allow anybody with an opinion the opportunity to share it.
The result?
The artist says she heard from students that they would like something different .
The school board has yet to decide on what to do with the deteriorating historic mural.
