The annual Stairway to the Stars series of concerts hit its 70th year anniversary this week.

Musicians from Malibu and Santa Monica public schools will play nights of Choir, Orchestra and Band music.

Stairway used to be a big joint appearance in the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium … but that venue is no longer available so there will be three performances in the Samohi’s Barnum Hall

Musicians will play in Santa Monica High’s Barnum Hall… over three nights.

Santa Monica-Malibu  is celebrating their school district’s successful music program with a series of concerts and an honoring of a former student.

Nearly 1,000 elementary, middle, and high school students will participate.

Students’ music education journey begins at SMMUSD in third grade with a basic music class from a certified teacher.

In 4th grade, they’re given an instrument.

Music teachers in elementary school are very unusual in California public schools.

Fundraising by parents and other supporters … pay for music classes.

The music world and Malibu are mourning the death of Dick Dale.

He was 81, he died Saturday after a long bout with cancer.

Dick Dale in the 1950s influenced the Beatles and Rolling Stones … Neil Young … long before Dick Dale had hit the top 40 charts and found fame.

In the 1960s  … Malibu musician John Zambetti heard those Dick Dale’s songs as a teenager growing up in New jersey … and studied Dick Dale’s technique … and formed a surf band called the Malibooz that has performed for four decades.

NEWSCART 75297 ZAMBETTI DICKDALE:26 QQQ SLASHING THRU WAVES.

“Dick Dale created the rhythms of the ocean, working with Leo Fender he created the Fender Reverb backboard technique,  that led to the reverb sound which really emulated the sounds of waves crashing.

“And his double clicking sound, going up and down the strains, thse big fat 60 gauge strings, emulated the sound of the board slashing through waves.”

[[[SOUND UP 70 PERCENT  MISERLOU FADES AT 1:03]]]

Dick Dale’s father was from  Lebanon.

And his music Incorporated middle eastern scales … minor keys … techniques from worlds that America was unfamiliar with just as surf music crashed ashore in the late 1950s.

Writes the LA Times: “`Misirlou’ represented a cross-cultural blend, coupling minor key motifs and Middle Eastern musical scale with pounding drums and throbbing bass, all fueling Dale’s stinging “wet” electric guitar pyrotechnics.”

Hear the mariachi trumpets in the bridge???

A decade ago Dale battled back from cancer.

Thirty years ago … Dick Dale played every week at the Trancas Beach restaurant.

His music gained a new audience when the movie “Pulp Fiction”.

One KBUU listener reminds us that “not many people are credited with creating a genre of music” … but Dick Dale did just that with surf music.

Dick Dale … dies of cancer … at age 81.
