Major Crime Down 18.6% From Last Year, Deputies Report

The major crime rate continues to drop in Malibu,

The latest crime statistics from the LA County sheriff’s office show an 18.6 percent decrease in major crimes for the first half of 2023 … as compared to the first half of the year before.

Keep in mind … the overall number of crimes that happen in Malibu is very very low … so the statistics can wobble around with just a small change in the raw data.

Sheriff’s deputies say they took 6 reports of rape over the first half of this year … compared to 2 cases over the first half of last year. 

The number of thefts from locked vehicles has dropped significantly … from 74 to 54.

The number of stolen cars has dropped by half … from 13 to 6. 

Add it all up … 199 serious crimes were reported in Malibu this year … compared to 162 last year.

The fire department’s list of fires for the month of May is out.

Two illegal bonfires on the beaches.

And one malfunctioning gas oven … a carbon monoxide alarm went off … the family said its natural gas oven has just been repaired and was apparently still leaking carbon monoxide into the house 

Public Safety Commission To Pick Up Homelessness Task Force Tasks

Malibu’s Homelessess Task Force has been disbanded.

The city council has transferred its responsibilities to the Public Safety Commission. 

After hours and hours of meetings … site visits and reports … the Homelessness Task Force members said nearly all of its assignments were left unfinished.

So … the task force’s list of assignments is now on the Public Safety Commission’s list of assignments.

And when they meet next week … that group of volunteers will take a look at what was done … and what was left unfinished … by the old Homelessness Task Force. 

The public safety commission meets Wednesday afternoon.

Malibu Voters Told Coastal Staff Won’t Take 12 Months To Evaluate Malibu High Zoning

Santa Monica school officials are making one last pitch for Malibu residence to send emails to the California coastal commission.

As we’ve been reporting… The school district is turning up the heat on the coastal commission… And asking for an end to delays in processing the Malibu high school rezoning application.

The commission staff has been involved in rewriting Malibu’s local Coastal program… To accommodate the new high school buildings on Morningview Drive.

But the commission staff says they need more time to analyze the zoning changes.

The repeated delays may kill the high school project… As inflation is eating away at the available bond money.

The state bureaucrats say they really don’t need another year… Just a couple of months.

But they are requesting a delay of 12 months just in case.

The school has been asking Malibu taxpayers to send letters to the coastal commission… Asking for prompt action.

Those e-mails need to be sent by today in order to make it to all the Coastal commissioners before the meeting… In a week.

City Says Speed Humps Bad Idea On Las Flores Canyon Road

Speeding traffic on Las Flores Canyon Road has people at the small private school there concerned.

They have asked the city of Malibu to put in speed bumps on the narrow and twisting canyon road … which links PCH to the Valley via a serpentine route over the top of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Idiots driving way too fast frequent this canyon. 

But a recent radar survey shows the vast majority of the drivers obeying the 25 mile per hour speed limit.

And there are tight curves and a steep road.

That means it’s not prudent or safe to put in speed humps … according to a report from the city public works director released this week.

Tye issue of speeding cars in Las Flores Canyon goes before the Malibu public safety commission next Wednesday.
