City Homelessness Plan Almost Ready, Town Hall Next Thursday

Written by on May 16, 2018

Six months after a fire that started at a homeless encampment endangered houses at the Civic Center  … a group of people trying to help the homeless … along with law enforcement and city officials … have come up with a Malibu Homeless Homelessness Strategic Plan.

And one week from Thursday … the city is hosting a community meeting to discuss the plan.

What is that plan?

It’s not quite ready for distribution … says emergency services coordinator Susan Duenas.

She describes it as a three-year Strategic Plan … a roadmap designed to improve the effective use of existing resources, and align local efforts in Malibu with those of the Los Angeles County region.

The goal is to balance the need to protect public safety with the humanitarian and long-term needs of homeless individuals.

The city acknowledges that Malibu residents have good reason to worry … about fires used for warmth or cooking in homeless encampments.

Homes were lost last year in Sepulveda Pass to a homeless encampment fire … and as we said a similar fire broke out at the Malibu Civic Center last winter.

A 50 thousand dollar grant funded the city’s homeless plan .. Which included input from Malibu residents, the Sheriff’s Department, churches, homeless charity groups, the business community, California State Parks and the County Public Library.

The meeting is in eight days … next Thursday at seven at City Hall.
