Here Are The Malibu Beach Report Cards – Not Great, But Not Bad
Written by 991KBU on July 1, 2020
California beach water quality improved in 2019-2020, driven in large part by decreased rainfall.
And heal The Bay’s annual report card says malibu beaches did fairly well … but not so much the beach at Topanga.
That beach is so polluted …. that it made the top 10 list of beach Bummers in California.
Topanga Beach has appeared on the Beach Bummer list regularly since the list started. A study published in 2014 found that Topanga Lagoon is likely the source of the bacteria pollution at the beach6. The lagoon receives high amounts of bird and dog fecal matter so when the lagoon is breached, the fecal matter flows into the ocean resulting in high bacteria concentrations. An ecological restoration of the lagoon is underway which could help mitigate the poor water quality
The renewed drought has flushed less crud into the ocean …
The 12 d=percent drop in rain means fewer pollutants, including bacteria, were flushed through storm drains and rivers into the ocean.
California beaches had excellent water quality during the summer months last year.
