‘Hail Yes, That Was Snow’ As Semifrozen Pellets of Ice Pelt The Bu

Call it hail.
Call it sleet.
Call it grapple.
The LA Times even called it “powder.”
Most people called it snow … but that really stretches the definition of the word …. snow.
Icy wet material fell over nearly all of Malibu yesterday.
It was 49 degrees in the Malibu at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon … but well down into the 30s in the moutnains … as the clouds opened up.
The western end of the Santa Monica Mountains … was dusted with enough snow to make Boney Mountain look like the matterhorn from some angles.
One person who has lived here for 50 years said he has never seen snow like that .. ever.
The National Park Service has pictures posted on the web … showing the fire blackened foothills … green growth … and snow capped peaks.
Amazing.
Here in Malibu … video is flitting about of frozen pellets bouncing on the ground.
And slush accumulating in some places.
At Trancas …. the slush melted to about point two inches of rain.
Nearly a half inch of rain and melted snow fell near Boney Peak … in the western end of the mountains.
Much less rain fell in eastern Malibu.
Had to go over Kanan Dume Road four times yesterday … it got wet … but not icy.
The problem at sunrise was temperatures that are cold enough to let ice form on the roads.
It was 34 degrees at Stunt Ranch … off Mulholland Highway … at 6 a-m.
There is a freeze warning for the local moutnains this morning …
That means temperatures could fall between 29 and 32 degrees for two or more consecutive hours, which could harm crops, sensitive vegetation, outdoor pets and livestock.
Prolonged exposure could also cause hypothermia in humans.
Roads may become icy due to the low temperatures.
