Firefighters Will Concentrate On Dangerous Decorative Trees, Plants

Los Angeles county firefighters say this years brush clearance inspections will be different.
Instead of concentrating on native vegetation in the hills next to houses…
The department warned in a letter sent last week that ornamental vegetation … trees and plants intentionally planted by homeowners … can be a major fire hazard.
Embers from ornamental plants lead to structure fires when I while fire sweeps through.
The department sent out a pamphlet a pamphlet and four page letter about defensible space.
The brush clearance deadline is always June 1st … and in the past firefighters concentrated on weeds and brush in nearby hills.
This year the department is warning people about concentrations of Bougainvillea or trumpet vines … which burned like crazy in the Woolsey fire.
And while most palm trees made it through the Woolsey fire without bursting into flames … the department says that dead or dying palm fronds are a major danger.
They say homeowners should consider removing palm trees.
