Extra Spice At Malibu Chili Cookoff This Year
Written by 991KBU on August 31, 2018
The 38th annual Malibu chili cook off kicks off tonight at the Malibu Civic Center.
It’s different but the same … for the first time this year the Malibu Kiwanis club is not running the Annual event.
Some controversy about that … the owner of the land has ousted the Kiwanis club … without comment … and given the lease for the event to the Malibu Boys and Girls Club.
The club has hired a professional event organizers to run the event this year.
The pains are being taken to make the carnival look and feel like it always happens.
The Kiwanis club members have worked hard on the event for decades … anFriday Nd to say their feelings are bruised is an understatement.
They’ve raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for community charities over the years.
But the landowner … the Malibu bay company … Felt it was time for a change.
It’s manager … Dave Reznick … volunteers on the board of the Boys and Girls Club and has been active on school District construction oversight committees for years.
Complicating the issue … the Malibu bay company has sold the land to the city of Malibu … which takes over ownership this month.
The boys and girls club meanwhile has named the local schools as a charity cosponsor for the event … your marking profits directly to the Boys and Girls Club and the schools.
This in a year where the Santa Monica Malibu school divorce is beginning … and Malibu schools will need local fundraising for science music and arts programs.
This could become a major political football …. in coming months.
