For the second time … at least the second time reported by Santa Monica police … a rental scooter rider has been seriously injured in a car crash.

A man who was riding a bird rental scooter ran a stop sign on Washington Avenue at Ninth Street Monday night.

He was hit buy a Honda sedan and taken to hospital.

Santa Monica has been overrun by electric scooters left scattered about the city … for rent … by a company called Bird.

This rider was not wearing a helmet … which is required by state law.

Bird has begin sending free helmets to riders who request one…. Using the app that is also used to pay for the rental.

The company says it has distributed more than 22,000 helmets since launching the program.

Santa Monica police have begun a ticket crackdown for burger writers not using helmets … riding on sidewalks … or riding the wrong way on the street.
