Politics is getting nasty in Santa Monica.
Santa Monica Malibu school board member Oscar de la Torre’s wife is suing the city council … and is represented by Malibu lawyer Kevin Schenkman.
They are arguing that holding citywide elections for Santa Monica city council discriminates against minorities …
The Santa Monica Daily Press reports that the school board member is going to be put into the witness stand this week … and accused by the city’s attorneys of throwing his election for city council… losing on purpose.
Some sort of legal strategy … a bitter fight.
How does this affect Malibu??
It is possible that the federal judge hearing this lawsuit might order Santa Monica to institute voting by district in both City council and school board elections.
Under a quirk of state laws … the City of Santa Monica has a city charter … and it controls the Santa Monica Malibu school district elections.
