Coastal City Defies Coastal Commission On Overnight Rentals

Written by on July 18, 2018

A coastal community near San Diego has told the California coastal commission that it will adopt a crackdown against overnight rentals … no matter what the commission says.

Del Mar City council members voted to reject requests from the coastal commission to water down the city’s proposed short-term rental ordinance.

Said the mayor of Del Mar … quote … “Standing up for what matters is in our DNA.

“We can’t let short-term rentals swallow up our neighborhoods.”

A city council member said “It isn’t noise, it isn’t traffic, it isn’t garbage,.

“It’s about having a business there (in residential neighborhoods).”

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Del Mar council decided last year to limit the rentals to a minimum of seven days at a time, and no more than 28 days per year.

Coastal didn’t like that .. they said no.

The city is challenging that.

The state agency has told Malibu that short-term rentals are a way to increase low-cost beach access.

The average air B and B rental in Malibu goes for $546 a night … according to the website air DNA.
